Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a treatment that we offer to patients with knee wear and tear. PRP is produced from the patient's own blood and has 6 times higher platelet concentration than the blood usually consists of. This is made in a machine that separates the blood components. Injection with PRP is inserted into the knee joint using ultrasound.
When PRP is inserted into a damaged area, it triggers an immune response. This helps the body's cells remove damaged tissue and it stimulates the formation of new tissue. It varies how long the healing process takes, and it depends on the body's ability to repair itself and how extensive the wear in the damaged area are. The goal of the treatment is to reduce pain and improve function.
There are a lot of promising research on PRP treatment, and in several of the studies, patients state that they experience 50-90% improvement in pain and function in their knees.
